Game: You're stuck with your first car for ever, good or bad?

I'm bored so lets play a game!

For what ever reason you are only ever allowed to own is the first car you ever owed. how bad or well off are you? And I do mean the first car in YOU're name. not the first car you drove around in like your mothers car in high school. haha

For me, Mine was a 1987 Dodge ares K in champagne

Kinja'd!!!

All in I'd have to say I would not be a super happy camper with this, but yet at the same time it was a very light car, got decent MPG and was super easy to work on and fix. but still, it had no sense of steering. Had all but 97 HP and only three speeds. terrible breaks and was generally a miserable POS. awful in the winter sense it literally only had one drive wheel. But at the same time it had two bench seats of moderate comfort and I did manage to mount a stereo easily enough, and the 2.2 does have some potential for being upgraded. In the end it was quite a reliant automobile, never could kill the damn thing. I'd say on a scale of fuck my life to fuck you bitches I hit the jack pot. I'd be a solid, Meh it beats having to take the bus.

Do I have to maintain it because that'd suck. If someone was covering that part I'd be in heaven.

Since I have yet to own my own vehicle (damn education), I'll go with the car that was essentially mine for two summers: a 2003 Nissan Maxima with the four-speed automatic.

Eh, could be worse. It drinks a lot and has a bit of rust now, but other than that, it's comfy as all hell, goes fast, has decent audio, and braking is good. I drove it in the ice storm we got in Toronto last year, and I have to say, I'd be okay with driving that car for the rest of my life.

1997 Chevy Lumina. It isn't very different from my current car. I would have had to have replaced the engine to continue driving this car as the head gasket went and it overheated and messed up the engine.

1997 Ford Ranger XL. It was a totally stripped down fleet special - scratch that, it did have the "handling package" - so no A/C, vinyl bench seat, no power steering, no carpet, no nothing. The regular cab was cramped, 2WD sucked when it snowed, and no A/C was miserable on hot summer days. But it got 30 MPG, was super reliable (200k+ miles), and if anything did actually break, was ridiculously easy and cheap to fix. And dammit if I didn't love that little truck. I'd be OK with it.

Yeah. The next car was a low mileage but kind of oldish Honda. That was a maintenance nightmare too. The next car was another Honda that was owned by a little old lady who literally only drove it to the grocery store and back. That was the worst. The transmission exploded on me on the highway. My first reliable car I got when I was probably about 19 or 20. It was a Hyundai Elantra wagon with a billion miles on it that cost pretty much nothing. It was only supposed to last a few months, but I drove it for like five years without so much as a hiccup. I think that that will ultimately be the best car that I've ever owned, though my AW11 might give it a run for its money. Maybe not though since the AW11 is expected to run forever whereas that first generation of good Hyundais were unexpected. No one knew if Hyundai could do it yet.

It depends. Can I get an exemption? My (technically) first car, a 1980 Pontiac Phoenix, was so terrible that my stepdad basically said "fuck that" and traded it for what I really consider my first car, an '83 Celebrity. I only drove the Phoenix for about a month and barely remember it because it was broken down all the time.

The Celebrity was awesome and tough beyond any reasonable expectation. My older sister and I used it as a daily driver over a span of about 8 years. I gave it to her when I got a new car, then it ended up back with me when she moved out of Boulder. It had a/c that didn't work, a speedometer that didn't work, driver's side door that didn't work, and near the end I had to keep the heater on full-blast to keep the engine cool. But we loved that thing.

I'm so glad you qualified the game with "in your name."

My first car was mom's hand me down, but it was never put in my name (insurance would have been way too high). I got it because mom said her '73 Mercury Cougar XR7 wasn't very quick. I told her to give me a week. She said OK and I took it to some drag racing buddies and they went mod crazy!

Kinja'd!!!

When she got it back, she tried to make a left turn from a side street onto a busy 4-lane, stomped the gas and burned rubber for a block and a half. She immediately stopped the car and walked home, gave me the keys and said, "Its yours... too much power now." I later found out my friends swapped in a 383 and a built trans. I loved that car.

When I went off to college my dad thought he was doing me a favor and bought me a brand new 79 Dodge Omni.

Kinja'd!!!

That too was never in my name. I initially refused it. But on one vacation my ride back to school got sick so I had to drive this heap from St Louis to Colorado Springs. I remember arriving at school deaf from the tiny 4cyl trying to do 80MPH across Kansas and my hands shaking for hours because it required a death grip to keep it on the road through the snow in Colorado. I hated everything about that car.

I finally got the first car in my name as a junior at the Air Force Academy. I couldn't see myself in one of the usual cadet cars (Corvette, RX-7, Camaros, BMWs) so I went for my dream car. I convinced my dad o sell the Omni. Give me a couple gand to match my own and the rest would be financed and he agreed. When I came home in '79 with a bright white '76 Jaguar XJS, he was speechless.

Kinja'd!!!

This picture is still on the wall in my childhood bedroom from the day I cut it out of Car & Driver back in '75. It was a perfect summation of what I wanted out of life. I actually achieved all three before I was 25 and its been all downhill since ;)

That Jag was the most fun I had back then with my clothes on. It was never lost in a sea of like cars as were the vettes at the Academy. It was actually only the second one in the state. It had a huge gas tank and lots of power and torque. The gas tank was important because as cadets juniors and seniors would loan their cars to sophomores and freshmen, but they had to fill the tank when done. I had that car for almost five years until the maintenance costs exceeded the note.

As a side note, an Academy story: Three years after graduation, I was in a nite club in Dayton Oh and struck up a conversation with a young lady. As the night progressed, I mentioned I had graduated from the Academy and she became almost giddy, reached in her purse, and she told me she had a close friend there. She then pulled out a picture of a cadet standing next to my Jag on one of the Academy overlooks and claimed it was his. I tactfully informed her that I remember the day, he couldn't afford to fill the tank so I asked him to wash and wax it and then told her she could take a ride in it since it was sitting outside. hehe

I'd be fairly happy. I still drive my first car right now, and all I really want to replace it is the exact same car with more power and some suspension upgrades; my plan is to simply buy one of the actual performance models, but there's nothing stopping me from putting the upgrades on the car I drive now, beyond a lack of mechanical expertise, and the fact that it'd definitely be cheaper to just buy a GTi.

And, hey, even if that isn't allowed under the rules of the game, I'm still happy with my car as is. It's a lot of fun to drive, extremely practical for its size, and comfortable enough for me.

It wouldn't have been so bad. Lots of mod support, lots of great comments, and it was reliable even in it's state of disrepair. I just wish that I had it later on in life so I could have better taken care of it.
